DIY Concrete Maintenance Checklist

July 3, 2026July 3, 2026 by Daniel Roberts

Concrete Foundations Adelaide most concrete problems don’t appear overnight.

They creep in quietly.

A bit of dirt that never gets cleaned. A tiny crack that’s ignored because it “doesn’t look too bad.” Water sitting in the same spot every winter. Before long, a driveway that should still look great starts looking older than it really is.

The funny thing is, concrete doesn’t ask for much.

After more than twenty years building driveways across Adelaide, I’ve found that homeowners who spend a couple of hours each year looking after their concrete usually avoid the expensive repairs altogether.

You don’t need to be a concreter.

You just need to know what to look for.

Walk your driveway every few months

Sounds simple, doesn’t it?

Most people drive over their driveway every day but rarely stop and actually look at it.

One thing we’ve noticed is that the smallest issues are often the easiest to fix.

A hairline crack today might only need monitoring. Leave it for a few years and moisture can work its way underneath, especially through Adelaide’s wet winters and hot summers.

Take five minutes every now and then.

Walk the length of the driveway.

You’ll notice far more on foot than you ever will behind the steering wheel.

Keep it clean

Concrete isn’t high maintenance, but it does appreciate a little attention.

Leaves left sitting for weeks can stain the surface.

Oil leaks become much harder to remove once they’ve baked through a couple of Adelaide summers.

Dirt gradually works its way into textured finishes like exposed aggregate.

Regular sweeping and the occasional wash with a concrete-safe cleaner keep the surface looking fresh without much effort.

You don’t need to pressure wash it every month.

Just don’t wait until it’s filthy.

Watch where the water goes

Here’s where people get caught out.

They notice puddles after rain and assume they’ll disappear on their own.

Sometimes they do.

Sometimes they’re telling you something.

Water that repeatedly sits in the same place can indicate drainage issues, minor settlement or changes in the ground underneath.

We’ve seen homeowners ignore a small puddle for years, only to discover it was the first sign that part of the driveway had started moving.

Water always leaves clues.

Reseal when it’s needed

If your concrete has been sealed, don’t assume that’s a lifetime job.

Sun, rain, tyres and everyday use gradually wear that protection away.

A simple way to check is to splash a little water onto the surface.

If it beads up nicely, the sealer is still doing its job.

If the water quickly soaks in, it might be time to think about resealing.

That’s especially worthwhile for exposed aggregate and coloured concrete.

Your DIY maintenance checklist

Most driveways only need a few simple checks each year:

  • Sweep away leaves, dirt and loose debris.
  • Clean oil spills before they soak into the surface.
  • Check for new cracks or areas of movement.
  • Watch for water pooling after heavy rain.
  • Inspect the edges for chips or damage.
  • Test whether the sealer is still protecting the surface.
  • Trim nearby plants or tree roots before they become a problem.

None of those jobs take very long.

Together, they can make a huge difference over the life of the driveway.

After doing hundreds of driveways across Adelaide, I’ve realised the best-looking concrete usually isn’t the newest. It’s the concrete that’s been looked after a little, year after year. Small problems stay small when someone notices them early.
